Dura-Bar


In 1961, Wells Manufacturing Company introduced Dura-Bar, the process of continuous iron casting, into North America . What began modestly then, has evolved into the largest producer of continuous cast iron in the world and the only producer in North America . Dura-Bar continuous cast iron is an engineered metal produced with advanced technical processes making it not only the finest cast iron in the world but a superior alternative to steel, castings and aluminum. Dura-Bar is available in ductile, gray, ni-resist and special alloyed grades.

DURA-BAR GRAY IRONS

Dura-Bar Gray Irons contain flake graphite in matrix structures that range from pearlite to pearlite plus ferrite depending on the grade. The matrix structure will influence machinability, strength, hardness and wear characteristics. In general, a fully pearlitic matrix will have the best mechanical properties and will be readily machinable.

The graphite structure influences strength, surface finish and hardness.

Dura-Bar Grade G-1 contains type A flake graphite in a mostly pearlitic matrix with small amounts of ferrite. This is the softest grade of the Dura-Bar gray irons and is normally selected when excellent machinability is desired and the application requires moderate strength, hardness and resistance to wear. Excellent surface finishes can be achieved which are especially significant where lapping is involved. This grade is similar to ASTM A48 Class 30.

Dura-Bar Grade G-1A contains type D flake graphite in a pearlite/ferrite matrix. This specification was originally developed for the glass mold industry where a fine grain structure and superior machining finish are required. Dimensional growth due to repeated heating and cooling cycles is minimal due to the smaller graphite flake size and ferritic matrix structure. This grade is not intended for hardening.

Dura-Bar Grade G-2 contains type A flake graphite in a pearlitic matrix. Gray iron bars made to this specification will have optimal strength, wear and hardness when compared to other gray iron grades. G-2 is the most common grade of gray iron and is well suited for applications requiring high resistance to wear and response to heat treatment. This grade is similar to ASTM A48 Class 40.

DURA-BAR DUCTILE IRONS

Ductile Iron was developed in the 1940s and became widely recognized as an engineered material by 1960. The popularity of using ductile iron continues to increase especially with the growing concern over leaded steels being an environmental hazard. The nodular graphite provides the same free machining benefits as lead without creating the machining and waste disposal problems. The ratio of ferrite to pearlite in the matrix is altered for each different grade in order to produce the required values for tensile and yield strength and elongation.

Dura-Bar Grade 65-45-12 contains nodular graphite in a ferritic matrix with small amounts of pearlite. The ferritic structure provides excellent machinability with good surface finishes along with optimal impact strengths, fatigue properties, electrical conductivity and high magnetic permeability. This iron has approximately the same tensile and yield strengths as AISI 1020 in the as-rolled condition. 65-45-12 is not intended for hardening. This grade is similar to ASTM A536 grade 65-45-12.

Dura-Bar Grade 80-55-06 contains nodular graphite in a matrix of ferrite and pearlite. The pearlite/ferrite structure provides higher wear resistance and strength when compared to a ferritic grade of ductile iron. This material is readily machinable with good surface finishes and good hardenability. Tensile and yield strengths will be approximately the same as AISI 1040 in the as-rolled condition. This grade is similar to ASTM A536 grade 80-55-06.

Dura-Bar Grade 100-70-02 contains nodular graphite in a matrix of pearlite with small amounts of ferrite. The pearlitic structure of this ductile iron maximizes the strength and wear characteristics and provides good response to heat treatment. This grade is similar to ASTM A536 grade 100-70-02.

Dura-Bar Grade HTN is a ductile iron designed to be austempered or heat treated to give properties possessing high strength and excellent wear resistance. In the as-cast condition HTN alloyed ductile iron parts will be similar to 80-55-06 in terms of machinability and mechanical properties. Additions of nickel and molybdenum are used to improve as-cast mechanical properties and to provide excellent response to heat treat. This grade is similar to ASTM A897-90.

DURA-BAR Ni-Resist

Dura-Bar Grade 201 Type 1 contains flake graphite in a matrix made up of austenite with approximately 10% alloy carbides. The austenitic matrix provides excellent corrosion resistance and is non-magnetic. Chrome is added to produce a carbide network that improves resistance to wear but does not adversely affect machinability. This grade is similar to ASTM A436.
